The journey to Ayaz Kala takes approximately 90 minutes. Ayaz Kala is one of the most impressive and largest fortresses in the region, comprising three fortresses situated on and around a prominent hill at the eastern end of the Sultan-Uiz-dahg range. The earliest, Ayaz Kala 1, sits atop the hill and dates back to the 4th century BCE, originally serving as a defense against nomadic raids from the Sace Lands of the Syrdarya delta to the north. Over time, rounded towers were added in the 3rd century BCE. A gravel road leads to a small cluster of yurts, serving as a tourist rest center with views overlooking a shallow yet picturesque lake. The fortress has medieval origins, likely founded during the Afrighid period around the 7th to 8th centuries CE (V.N.Yagodin & A.V.G.Betts, 2006, Ancient Khorezm, UNESCO).

After exploring Ayaz Kala, it’s a 90-minute drive back to Khiva or a 60-minute drive back to Urgench. Our driver will drop you off at Urgench Airport, Urgench/Khiva Train Station, or your hotel in either Khiva or Urgench, concluding the day trip without any additional charge.”
